After reading Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers, it has many details of the journey and establishment of the God's people, as well as the nations that departed from Egypt. While there are many stories within these pages, the main lesson comes from the saying the "Grass is not always greener". The Israelites endured many problems in the desert, so that in comparison, Egypt looked like a paradise. It was easy for them to forget they were demeaned, tortured and forced to be slaves.
The situation came to a head with the exploration of Canaan (Numbers 13:26 -end of chapter 14). Twelve spies were sent out and only two of them told the truth. This resulted in hostility, constant grumbling, and threating to return to Egypt with a new leader. While God is loving and patient, He had to make an example of His people. Those that had witnessed the miracle, would not see the promised land. The children the Israelites were worried about, would eventually reap the reward after the former generation died.
Firstly, their lack of faith disqualified them from God's promises, they could not see that all the tests in the desert, were to strengthen them in the future. Secondly, they looked back to Egypt to solve their problems, when it was the source. Finally, the could not trust God to protect them and their children. The spies had a small glimpse of what they could expect to experience in Canaan, but only Joshua and Caleb truly believed that the land could be conquered and enjoy the blessings.
When the grass appears to be greener for us, we need to remember that God has always the best plan, whether we see it or not. Tests may come to challenge us, hindering our decisions. God will always be our refuge, and has greater wisdom for us. We should allow God to take the reins and not make rash actions. Entering Canaan without Him, meant His people would lose. It is reassuring to note that God always has the green pasture for us that will not only benefit us, but others in His kingdom too!
